Ilie Coada of Moldova is the 2014 recipient of the Denton and Janice Lotz Human Rights Award.

The award is given each year by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) to an individual who has made significant and effective contribution to secure, protect, restore or preserve human rights.

The announcement was made during a meeting of the BWA Executive Committee in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, in the United States on March 4. Award presentation will be at the next meeting of the BWA General Council in Izmir, Turkey, in July.

WASHINGTON D.C., March 19, 2013 - The World Bank Board of Executive Directors today approved a US$ 10 million credit to the Republic of Moldova for the Emergency Agriculture Support Project. The proposed credit would help finance the costs associated with alleviating the emergency in the country’s agriculture sector caused by the 2012 drought.

Summary: CHF 171,996 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Red Cross Society of Moldova in delivering immediate assistance to some 5,800 beneficiaries (2,240 families). Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

In 2012, Moldova suffered the combined impacts of poor rainfall and extremely high temperatures that resulted in major losses in the national crop production.

Key messages

•Agricultural production was sharply reduced by a severe drought in 2012. Cereal grain production dropped by 51% compared to previous year’s, potatoes by 48%, vegetables by 36% and sunflower by 31%. Livestock production was marginally affected.

•Rural households have been hardly hit by the drought in particular small farmers and agricultural workers in the Southern and Central regions of the country.

•Food prices increased by 3% during the last quarter of 2012. They were on average 5% higher than in same period of 2011.
