Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylum seekers and almost 56,000 Malian refugees in and around Mbera camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In October alone, 167 new arrivals were registered in Mbera camp.

Nouakchott – This week (04/12), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Mauritania facilitated a mass displacement border crisis simulation exercise in Bassikounou, South-Eastern Mauritania, at the border with Mali. The exercise was designed to strengthen border management and coordination mechanisms between border communities and local stakeholders during a crisis.

Geneva, Mauritania – Areas of Mauritania that were under the threat of anti-personnel mines for forty years are now deemed safe. “I am extremely honoured to declare that after four decades since these weapons were laid and nearly two decades of clearance, Mauritania is free of all known mined zones. This makes us the 31st State Party to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention to declare such feat,” said Mr. Alioune Ould Menane, Coordinator of Mauritania’s humanitarian mine clearance programme for development (pndhd).

MAURITANIA

  • Mauritania, a predominantly desert country of 4 million people, faces high levels of poverty and hunger. The World Bank reports that nearly a third of Mauritanians live under the national poverty line. In addition, a mid-2017 national nutrition survey found that acute malnutrition affected approximately 11 percent of children younger than 5 years of age, representing a serious situation per UN World Health Organization guidelines.

For each FEWS NET country and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year.

NOUAKCHOTT, 1st October, 2018 (WAM) -- The UAE Embassy in Nouakchott has distributed food assistance to people affected by drought in Mauritania, as part of the Year of Zayed initiative - 2018.

The assistance, funded by the Sharjah Charity House, Sharjah Charity International, included food items, such as rice, sugar, cooking oil which were distributed to hundreds of Mauritanian families and other eligible persons across rural areas.

Beneficiaries commended the gesture and extended thanks and appreciation to the UAE Embassy and other charitable organisations.

Finding Solutions The Government of Mauritania maintains a firm position that voluntary repatriation has concluded in 2012. Consequently, local integration and resettlement are the viable durable solutions. Both countries of asylum provide favorable frameworks and environment for alternative legal status and naturalization.
