At the border crossing point of Morina there were 15 heavy tonnage trucks, which transported from Kosovo to Albania the material for the construction of 90 m "bailey" bridge. This assistance comes in response to the request for help from Albania which was made after the recent floods, where over 65 bridges were heavily damaged.

A. Situation analysis

Description of the disaster

Heavy rainfall affected the territory of Albania since 30 November 2017. In some areas the density of rain was 130 mm for two uninterrupted hours. The rivers levels have been rapidly increasing, the water channels were blocked by debris streams, leading to floods in urban and densely populated areas.

  • As of the 9 December 08.00 UTC further rains are expected over the weekend, however these are not forecast to have a significant impact.

  • To date National Authorities reported over 15 000 ha have been affected by flooding.

  • On the 5 December, the Union Civil Protection Mechanism was activated and thus far Austria, France, Greece, Slovakia and Slovenia have made offers via the Mechanism.

Belgrade, 8 Dec 2017 – The government of Serbia adopted at today's session the decision to send to the Republic of Albania financial assistance of €100,000 for the rehabilitation of the consequences of the floods that recently hit this country.

Due to the difficult humanitarian situation, the government of Serbia will, in addition to its financial resources, also send assistance in the goods.

NATO Allies and partners began this week helping Albania cope with the most severe rainfalls ever recorded in the country. Albania requested assistance from the NATO’s Euro Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) on 4 December, following the onset of heavy rainfalls in central and southern parts of the country. According to the Albanian authorities, the floods damaged more than 4,500 buildings, 36 power stations and dozens of roads. The floods also led to the temporary closure of Tirana’s main airport and to evacuations.

  • On 5 December the UCPM was activated after receiving a request from Albania.

  • Priority requested items are bridge reconstruction elements, power generators, water motor pumps, water safety and rescue garments and other relief items.

  • 18 maps have been produced so far by the Copernicus Emergency Management Service

  • Torrential rain and associated severe flooding continues to affect most of the country since 1 December, causing damages.

  • As of 4 December at 08.00 UTC, national civil protection authorities reported 1271 flooded houses, 3078 flooded houses and 278 endangered houses, 56 bridges damaged, 716 families evacuated and accommodated.

Tirana, 25 October 2017 – Among activities to mark World Food Day, dedicated this year to Food and Migration, a meeting on "The Role of Returned Migrants Returned to the Achievement of Sustainable and Long-Term Development Goals Sustainable " organized today with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the United Nations in Albania, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), as well as other contributors to rural development.

On 18 August, Albania issued a request for assistance for one Canadair or a helicopter to respond to a major fire near Voskopoje municipality in the south of the country.

13 Aug 2017 description
  • Since the beginning of the forest fire season, fires have been burning across the country. As the situation remained critical, on 9 and 11 August, Albania renewed its request for aerial firefighting means through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

  • On 11 August, two Greek fire fight aircraft operated in southern Albania, close to the Greek border, this represented the sixth day in the past fortnight where Greece provided assistance, via the Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

  • Two Greek light firefighting airplanes operated in Albania on 3-6 and 9 August. In addition, two Greek Canadairs took off at 5 am on 11 August from Thessaloniki to operate in the south of Albania, close to the border with Greece. As of 8.00 UTC, the Canadairs were already on their second rotation of the day.
