Georgetown – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, is providing essential non-food items (NFI) such as personal hygiene products (insect repellent, soap, toothpaste), cleaning products (buckets, detergents, chlorine), along with mosquito nets, hammocks, and blankets to highly vulnerable Venezuelan migrants in Guyana.

The initiative, carried out as part of IOM Regional Action Plan (RAP), has reached over 793 Venezuelan migrants, particularly members of the indigenous Warao tribe arriving in the regions of Barima Waini and Pomerron Supanaam.

Agriculture Minister, Noel Holder on Sunday led a team of officials to areas in Canal No. 1 and 2 on the West of Bank Demerara to assess flooded agricultural areas and implement immediate interventions to assist farmers in the affected communities.

During the visit, the Minister and team interacted with farmers and residents of the villages, as they sought to look at alternatives which would bring immediate relief to those affected.

Reports indicated that due to increased rainfall over the last week, lowing-lying areas including the conservancy dam at Canal Number One have been flooded.

In light of the existing weather, Minister of State Joseph Harmon is assuring that the National Emergency Monitoring system remains activated on a 24-hour basis with the ten administrative regions being actively monitored.

The Minister, who was speaking during his post-cabinet press conference, said monitoring is being conducted via social media, television, HF radios, mobile and landline telephones to ensure that there is a timely and effective response to any incident, with respect to the heavy rainfall.

Officials from the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and Region Three, visited Canal No. 1 on Thursday and begun delivering assistance to some 200 families, whose homes and farmlands were extremely affected by the recent heavy rainfall.

Director General Acting, Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Major Kester Craig, who visited the homes of several residents, said that CDC is currently mobilising sanitation supplies to be distributed to the most affected persons.
