PELUNDO, GUINEA-BISSAU — Senegalese refugees in Guinea-Bissau are getting identification cards after years — and, for some, decades — of living in a state of limbo.

Ibrahima Ingo has lived in Pelundo, near Guinea-Bissau's border with Senegal, since 1992 when he fled southern Senegal due to unrest in the country's Casamance region. Today marks the first time he will register to receive his national identification card as a Guinea-Bissau citizen.

Political instability in Guinea-Bissau has had a significant impact on the health system.

A lack of resources and qualified personnel, and the practical nonexistence of a referral system, limits the population’s access to good quality basic healthcare services.

The situation is exacerbated further by the lack of prevention activities and effective epidemiological vigilance.

The three organizations welcome the progress made toward stabilizing the country, thanks to the engagement of Guinea-Bissau stakeholders and the support provided by ECOWAS, in conjunction with the African Union and the United Nations.

Under heavy rain, Ica Lopes Da Silva, accompanied by her son Julio Cesar, tries to carry, towards a rented tricycle motorbike, the items she has just received from the Red Cross of Guinea Bissau. The 53-year-old woman lives with disability but insists she has to participate in the offloading and loading exercise. It took lengthy negotiations by Red Cross volunteers to dissuade and spare her from this difficult task.

“This is nothing compared to what I have experienced,” she said.

Summary of the revisions to the Emergency Plan of Action:

In the week of July 9, following the launch of the DREF, an assessment team was deployed in Guinea Bissau to support the Red Cross Society of Guinea Bissau (CRGB) in the kick-off and supervision of the operation. The main objectives of the mission were to:

  • Revise needs assessment tools and processes (in the sectors covered by the DREF and other sectors, if necessary) and facilitate the collection of additional data required.

Bissau, 28 July 2018: In line with its mandate to promote and enhance peace and security in the continent, the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) undertook a field mission to the Republic of Guinea Bissau from 27 to 28 July 2018. The mission took place in the framework of the implementation of various decisions of the Council on the situation in Guinea Bissau, as well as within context of the implementation of the Conakry Agreement of the October 2016 and the 2016 Bissau Roadmap aimed at bringing the political crisis in Guinea Bissau to an end.
