ON 9 APRIL 1992 LOCAL TIME (04.30HRS GMT 10 APRIL) SENDING COLUMN OF ASH 7,000 METRES HIGH AND REACHING LEON (LOCATED 80 KM FROM MANAGUA). SINCE ITS FORMATION IN 1850, THERE HAVE BEEN 16 ERUPTIONS WITH LATEST BEING MOST VIOLENT. VOLCANIC ACTIVITIES ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR WEEKS.

1. ON 24 MARCH 1992 HEAVY FLOODS OCCURRED AT THE EQUATORIAL COAST FOLLOWING TORRENTIAL RAINS.

2. ACCORDING TO CIVIL DEFENCE THE FLOODS HAVE AFFECTED 10,200 HA. 10,000 HA HAVE BEEN DECLARED ALERT ZONE YELLOW (TEMPORARY EVACUATION) AND 200 HA ALERT ZONE ORANGE (EVACUATION FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD).

A STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED BY THE GOVERNMENT IN THE DEPARTMENT OF BENI, WHERE RIVERS OVERFLOWED, FLOODING AN ESTIMATED 100,000 SQUARE KILOMETERS OF PASTURE, KILLING LIVESTOCK AND LEAVING THOUSANDS HOMELESS. THE RISK OF THE SPREAD OF WATER-BORNE DISEASES, SUCH AS CHOLERA, IS HIGH.

WHICH IS UNUSUAL FOR THIS AREA. PRESENT SNOW DEPTH VARIES FROM TWO TO FIVE METRES AND SNOW KEEPS FALLING.

2. DEATH TOLL AS OF 3 FEB: 104 SOLDIERS AND 34 CIVILIANS. APPROX. 1,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED.

FOUND 6,000 FAMILIES WERE RENDERED HOMELESS. OFFICIAL ESTIMATED
LOSS INCLUDES 6,050 HOUSES, 12,000 DATE TREES, 4,900 HEADS OF
LIVESTOCK, 300 TONS OF DRIED FISH, AND FISHING BOATS.
