SITUATION

1. MONSOON RAINS IN SOUTHERN PART OF SRI LANKA, INCLUDING COLOMBO, SOUTHERN KALUTARA, GALLE, MATARA AND RATNAPURA AREAS, CAUSED FLOODING WHICH STARTED LAST WEEK AND WORSENED ON 31 MAY 1993. OFFICIAL SOURCES ESTIMATE THAT OVER 28,000 FAMILIES HAVE BEEN AFFECTED WITH 8 PEOPLE REPORTED DEAD. THE METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT HAS PREDICTED THAT THE PRESENT FLOOD CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE AND MIGHT WORSEN DURING NEXT FEW DAYS.

1. UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR REPORTS SEVERE LANDSLIDES FOLLOWING HEAVY RAINS IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF ECUADOR NEAR THE CITY OF CUENCA AND PAUTE RIVER.

RAINS AND MUD HAVE CREATED AN ARTIFICIAL WALL OF 30 MILLION M3 OF STONE AND MUD BLOCKING THE RIVER AND AFFECTING THE TURBINES OF A MAJOR ELECTRICITY PLANT SUPPLYING A LARGE PART OF THE COUNTRY. 30,000 - 40,000 PEOPLE ARE ESTIMATED TO BE AFFECTED AND EVACUATION HAS BEGUN.
