Statement by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMIK, Zahir Tanin, Condemning Recent Threats of Ethnic Cleansing

This weekend’s statement by a senior Kosovo Parliamentarian, using hate speech to threaten ethnic cleansing, is unacceptable, and a cause for serious concern. I call on all responsible leaders to condemn this statement, and on the judicial authorities to undertake the necessary investigation of this incident and take appropriate action in accordance with Kosovo law.

Prishtinë/Priština, 19 October 2013 – Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo Ambassador Jean-Claude Schlumberger strongly condemned the attack on the property of Ninoslav Đerić who is a candidate for the North Mitrovica/Mitrovicë municipal assembly in the 3 November elections.

An explosive device was thrown at the balcony of Đerić’s apartment last night just past midnight. He was at home with his family at the time of the incident.

PRISTINA – UNMIK SRSG Farid Zarif strongly condemns the bombing incident that occurred this morning in northern Mitrovica, which targeted the home of a Kosovo Serb, Nebojsa Maric, and caused extensive property damage to his house, neighbouring buildings, as well as a vehicle.

"These cowardly acts of violence are reprehensible, and they gravely jeopardise security and stability in the region," stated SRSG Zarif.

PRISTINA - SRSG Farid Zarif strongly condemns the incidents and provocative acts that occurred today in Kosovo, particularly the attack against a number of buses carrying passengers, mostly children of Serbian nationality.

Since 1981, World AIDS Day has provided an opportunity for individuals to come together to fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS, to show support for those living with HIV/AIDS, to celebrate victories in overcoming the spread of HIV/AIDS and to commemorate those who have lost their lives from HIV/AIDS.

A graduation ceremony for 21 high-level officials from the police, customs, Police Inspectorate of Kosovo, Special Prosecutor’s office and judiciary who participated in a five-day OSCE-organized training course on combating corruption within law enforcement agencies was held on 25 November 2011 in Vushtrri/Vučitrn.

The course to effectively indentify and investigate corruption was also used as an opportunity to improve relations between the agencies and share experiences and best practices.

PRISTINA - Robert Sorenson, UNMIK Officer in Charge, expresses his deep concern for the ongoing situation in northern Kosovo and calls upon all parties to refrain from any action which could further exacerbate the situation.

UNMIK strongly condemns the violence and believes that dialogue based upon mutual respect is the way forward for resolving issues.

Good morning everybody, the SRSG Ambassador Zannier was last week in New York where he had several meetings, including with the UN Secretary General. He met on two occasions with Serbian Foreign Minister Jeremic to discuss the ongoing dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade. This morning at 09:00, the SRSG met with PM Thaçi and briefed him on his meetings in New York.

Today is actually our last press conference in this compound. The SRSG will leave this HQ and move to our new HQ on Friday.

Kosova Sot: Russell, what is the court in the north doing right now? Is it working? Is it completely functioning?

Russell: Well, as you know, on Friday, the personnel, UNMIK personnel - two international Judges, two international prosecutors and support staff, court staff - moved into the courthouse. They are settled into their offices.

PRISTINA - In the latest step to normalize rule of law in the north of Kosovo, UNMIK today reopened the courthouse in north Mitrovica.

From today, the courthouse will be staffed by UNMIK international personnel, including two judges, two prosecutors, legal officers and administrative assistants. In this initial phase of the reopening, the prosecutors and international judges will only handle urgent criminal cases, and apply UNMIK law and procedure. Civil cases will not be heard.

In the next phase, local judicial workers and court staff would be introduced.

Good morning! The OSCE Mission has as of today a new Head of Mission: Ambassador Werner Almhofer from Austria. Ambassador Almhofer was previously the Austrian Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. He will have to go back to his duty station in Sarajevo for next week to do check out and finish his work there. By mid-October, he will fully move to Pristina.

Elli: I hope not. Listen, the appointment of the head of Mission is done by the chairmanship, so I will have to refer to all detailed questions to the Finnish Foreign Ministry or to the the Secretariat in Vienna.

PRISTINA - Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG), Lamberto Zannier, today held a townhall meeting with UNMIK's staff on the reconfiguration process, and explain how it will affect the Mission and its work.

"After nine years, the situation in Kosovo has changed and that means UNMIK too has to change," SRSG Zannier said.

He added that the present reconfiguration is one of a series throughout the Mission's life.

PRISTINA - Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG), Lamberto Zannier, and Paul Acda, the head of UNMIK's Pillar IV, today visited the compound of the former Kosovo Trust Agency (KTA), now the Privatisation Agency of Kosovo (PAK).

"So far it seems that there is no evidence of anything missing, besides the complete hardcopy set of the documents of the KTA Board of Directors which is in UNMIK's possession. I have received assurances from EU Pillar representatives, that there is an electronic back-up of all KTA documents including claims.
