Islamabad, 4 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - There are reports today of fresh fighting in Afghanistan between forces of warlords General Rashid Dostam and his former ally General Abdul Malik.

The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press reports that at least 11 people were killed and more than 40 injured. The reports say Dostam's troops captured the small northern town of Andkhoi, west of Mazar-i-Sharif, and were pushing towards Maimana, capital of Faryab province and Malik's headquarters. There is no independent confirmation.

PNG DROUGHT UPDATE

Increased AusAID funded flights have delivered more food aid to PNG's drought affected provinces.

There are now 1 Hercules, 4 Caribou, 3 Black Hawk and 2 Chinooks involved in the latest aid deliveries to Central and Western Provinces.

To date the aid flights have targeted 50 000 people identified as living in category 5 areas only able to be reached by air. Their monthly supply requirement is 320 tonnes of rice, 80 tonnes of flour, and 40 000 litres of cooking oil.

OLVESTON, Montserrat, Nov 3 (Reuters) - The Soufriere Hills volcano on the ravaged island of Montserrat threatens to explode again at any time, officials said on Monday.

Yerevan, 3 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - A senior U.S. State Department official says only a settlement acceptable to all the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict can bring a lasting peace and provide security in the region.

KUCHING, Malaysia (Reuters) - Smoky pollution from fires in Indonesia returned to Malaysia's Sarawak state on Monday, cutting visibility and causing several flight cancellations, officials said.

After weeks of clearer skies helped by rain and favourable winds, southeasterly winds brought more smog to Sarawak, a state on the north side of the island of Borneo which was put under a 10-day state of emergency last month, the Meteorological Department said.
