Displaced Communities in Ukraine Put Down Roots, Integrate in Local Communities, Says IOM Survey

Kyiv – Natalia is not from Mariupol and would not be living in this industrial city in southern Ukraine were it not for the conflict that displaced her and her family from their home village of Shyrokyne in February 2015.

But she treats the city as if it were her own, organizing fellow-displaced people as well as locals to clean up a messy public space next to a food kiosk she has opened with the help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Between June 1 and August 18, 2018, Kerala experienced the worst floods ever since 1924. The torrential rains triggered several landslides and forced the release of excess water from 37 dams across the state, aggravating the flood impact. Nearly 341 landslides were reported from 10 districts. The devastating floods and landslides affected 5.4 million people, displaced 1.4 million people, and took 433 lives. The Government reports that 1,259 out of 1,664 villages spread across the state’s 14 districts were affected.

The survey, carried out in October 2018, was administered in 24 collective sites in the Ukhia and Teknaf subdistricts. It is the second round of data collection, with the first taking place in July 2018. The goal is to use the views of affected people to inform humanitarian response and adjust programming accordingly.

The ICRC in South Sudan will expand its primary and secondary health-care services (including mental health and psychosocial support) in the frame of the World Bank-financed health services project (PEHSP).

The project's objective is to increase the utilization and quality of an essential package of health services in the Republic of South Sudan, notably in the former states of Upper Nile and Jonglei.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

• The Northern Region received normal to above while the Centre and South receive below normal rainfall.

• The Centre and South experienced prolonged dry spells averaging 2-4 weeks while the North experienced minimal dry spells in isolated places.

• Fall army worms infestations were reported in all districts but unlike last year control measures were spontaneous this season thus minimising impact.

• Maize production has dropped from 3.5million MT to 2.7 million MT representing 28%.
