OVERVIEW

In 2016 and 2017 Brazil has witnessed a sharp increase in the number of asylum applications submitted by Venezuelan nationals. By November 2017, according the official statistics, there were 20,137 Venezuelan asylum seekers in Brazil. Considering the evolving situation in Venezuela, the number of persons fleeing the deteriorating situation in Venezuela is likely to keep rising.

OVERALL FINDINGS

Ar-Raqqa governorate is located in northeast Syria. The Euphrates River flows through the governorate and into the Al-Thawrah Dam, the largest hydroelectric dam providing electricity in Syria, although years of conflict have limited its ability to generate electricity. Since the conflict over Ar-Raqqa city ended in October 2017, electricity services have been mostly unavailable. However, recent repairs to the Al Furosya electric station resulted in 72% of the assessed communities relying primarily on the electricity network in April.

OVERALL FINDINGS

Quneitra governorate is located in southern Syria in the Syrian Golan Heights. Situated within the Jordan River Basin in close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, Quneitra receives the highest average rainfall throughout Syria. Approximately half of the assessed communities in Quneitra sourced their water from closed wells, and all communities reported having a sufficient amount of water to cover household needs. Additioinally, Key Informants (KIs) reported that water was fine to drink in all of the assessed communities.

Introduction

Large numbers of Ar-Raqqa city residents have returned to their homes following the cessation of conflict in the city in late October 2017. Despite initial recovery efforts, damage remains widespread and basic services are limited. Moreover, high levels of unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination and a complex security environment continue to pose risks and challenges both for city residents and humanitarian and stabilisation actors.
