Introduction

Problem statement Intra- and inter-country movement is a central feature of West African life. Some people move as a result of conflict, but most move for social and economic reasons. Migration within and from the region has often had a positive effect on household, local and national economies, including through remittances and access to educational and employment opportunities. It is often a necessary way of coping with limited economic opportunities, poverty, subsistence and harsh environments, but can also be aspirational.

MIXED MIGRATION FLOWS TO EUROPE

Between July and September 2018, a total of 45,092 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe, 14 per cent more than the 39,402 registered in the second quarter and two and a half times the 18,956 registered in the first three months of the year. More than a half (53%) of arrivals were registered as land and sea arrivals to Spain (24,361). Greece has received the second largest caseload of arrivals (14,226), three times more than 4,447 arrivals registered in Italy during this reporting period (July – September 2018).

IOM voluntary humanitarian returns from Libya: On 8 August 2018, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), reported that it had facilitated the return of 10,950 stranded migrants from Libya through its Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) Programme, following an important increase in the number of detainees recorded in Libya. Among these, 9,636 were returned to countries in Central and West Africa.

UNHCR’s new Desperate Journeys report shows that more than 1,600 people have died or gone missing while attempting to reach Europe so far this year.

Voluntary Return Assistance by International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Niger: As of July 2018, 8,000 refugees and migrants were rescued during 84 search and rescue operations. 90% of them were rescued near the border towns of Arlit and Assamaka. Half of the refugees and migrants who arrived at IOM Transit points in Niger had no identification documents.
