Overview of Hazard Incidents in July 2018*

In the month of July 2018, eight hazards have been occurred with the total frequency of 54 among which 3 types were manmade (fire, boat-capsize, building collapse) and 5 were natural (lightning, heavy rainfall, flood, flash flood, and landslide). These hazard incidents took lives of 26 persons and injured about 19 people.

Over 12,600 persons have been verified through the Government of Bangladesh and UNHCR joint verification exercise, as of 31 July. Shelter upgrades and refugee relocations continue in the camps. Heavy rains raise risks of water- and vector-borne diseases, and trainings were conducted to build further emergency faecal sludge management capacity. Space for emergency evacuations and sustainable relocations remain topline needs, and funding gaps continue to limit capacity.

Highlights

  • Over 12,600 persons have been verified through the Government of Bangladesh and UNHCR joint verification exercise, as of 31 July. All persons above the age of 12 have received an ID card and all householders received a family certificate, which will be used for the provision of protection and assistance in Bangladesh. The exercise aims to consolidate a unified database for identity management, documentation, provision of protection and assistance, population statistic and ultimately solutions.

During the reporting week, Cox’s Bazar recorded 853 mm of rain compared to 219 mm received the previous week. This was the rainiest week of the monsoon season thus far—463mm of rain fell on 25th July alone. In July, Cox’s Bazar registered 1,586 mm total rainfall, which is 50% above the average for July.

  • 2,197 households and 3,501 households have been reached through Cash/Voucher for Shelter/Rental and NFI respectively.
