Based on three years of in-depth research, the framework proposes a new way to think about fire risk in informal settlements. It aims to help NGOs, aid organisations and governments consider fire safety holistically and provides recommendations to help communities build their resilience.

Overview of Hazard Incidents in September, 2018

In the month of September six types of hazards had been occurred among which two were manmade (fire and boat capsize) and four were natural (lightning, flood, earthquake and riverbank erosion). These hazards, all together, took lives of 29 persons and injured about 59 people.

BRAC has been implementing a holistic, multi-sector response since the influx began in August 2017, in close coordination with the government and other partners through the Inter Sector Coordination Group. We have been working in Cox’s Bazar for the last 35 years, including specifically with the Rohingya population from previous influxes, and are pursuing an adaptive, phase-wise strategy that sequences our interventions to provide integrated services to everyone affected by the crisis.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Over 13,009 persons have been verified through the Government of Bangladesh and UNHCR joint verification exercise, as of 31 August. All persons above the age of 12 received an ID card and all households received a family certificate, which will be used for the provision of protection and assistance in Bangladesh. The exercise aims to consolidate a unified database for identity management, documentation, provision of protection and assistance, population statistics, and ultimately solutions.
