As the first responders in many communities, Food for the Hungry (FH) field staff in the Philippines are finding communities completely destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan.

In Samar, one of the hardest hit parts of the Philippines, FH staff found one community of 53,000 people “100 percent damaged in terms of agriculture and infrastructure.”

With Hurricane Isaac recently causing havoc in Haiti, it is a good time to reflect that even when Haiti is not in the news for storms or earthquakes, FH is active behind-the-scenes helping local leaders create healthy and disaster-resilient communities. One of these cases is Belladere, a town close to the border of the Dominican Republic. It’s densely populated and poor, and only about half the inhabitants get a school education.

Tropical Storm Isaac passed through Haiti and the Dominican Republic (DR) early this morning. The FH Emergency Response Unit has been in regular contact with the field. FH Haiti Country Director Bekele Hankebo and FH DR Program Director Cristopher Garrido reported that while it is still raining in both countries, the worst has passed, and that the damage does not appear to be as bad as feared.

On December 17, Tropical Storm Washi killed 650 people and caused 800 to go missing in the Mindanao Island of southern Philippines. Heavy rains and flash floods swept through streets displacing more than 150,000 people.

Food for the Hungry/Philippines is responding to help survivors through a local church network of Campus Crusade for Christ. FH/Philippines is helping to support Campus Crusade for Christ’s work of setting up 30 evacuation centers to house and feed more than 20,000 displaced people.

But I had no idea how much more acutely they feel pain from these events until I started to research it.

Food for the Hungry responds swiftly to provide emergency help

Food for the Hungry is responding to provide relief assistance to victims of Hurricane Ida, which swept through parts of Central America before taking aim for the United States.

Ida was declared a hurricane on Thursday, November 5, while it was off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Flash floods and mudslides destroyed homes and schools in Nicaragua, displacing more than 13,000 people, according to latest estimates.

Kalapara - Mithaganj, Nilganj, Khapra Banga, Dulasar and Chakamaiya

On November 30, mudslides triggered by super typhoon "Reming" (international code name: "Durian") swamped villages in the eastern province of Albay, Philippines, leaving hundreds of people dead and thousands fleeing to evacuation centers.

On September 28, typhoon "Milenyo" - the strongest to hit the Philippines in 11 years - slammed into the country's capital of Manila and parts of Luzon and the Visayas, killing more than 100 people and causing extensive damage to property, agricultural crops, roads and highways.

The storm toppled trees and triggered landslides, blocking some provincial roads.

On Saturday, October 8 -- Torrential rains from Tropical Storm Stan caused an avalanche of mud up to 40 feet deep, engulfing many homes in the Mayan highland area of Guatemala near Lake Atitlan. The mudslide, measuring almost a mile wide, poured down and destroyed at least two villages and is feared to have buried as many as 1400 people.

PHOENIX, AZ, September 12, 2005 -- Following its mandate to walk with churches, leaders, and families, Food for the Hungry has identified two catalyst organizations - the John M. Perkins Foundation and Urban Impact - to mobilize local churches and ministries to respond to the physical and spiritual hardship caused by Hurricane Katrina.

The partner organizations were identified based on an assessment trip headed up by Food for the Hungry's Pete Howard, the current program director for tsunami relief and development operations in Meulaboh, Indonesia.
