This figure includes costs for emergency assistance as well as financial assistance to homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained storm damages.

Direct Relief International has furnished $26 million in emergency medical material aid and $3 million dollars in emergency cash support to assist people affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita over the past four months.
In a four-month update issued today, the California-based organization reported:

$4 million in contributions designated for the hurricane response;

Providing 77 tons of medicines and supplies worth over $26 million (wholesale) through 80 shipments to 64 facilities;

WASHINGTON, Dec 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Wednesday approved $29 billion in funds for rebuilding levees, schools and other structures in Gulf Coast states hit hard by Hurricane Katrina.

The money, more than $10 billion above the Bush administration's request, was attached to an end-of-year defense spending bill that the Senate approved by a vote of 93-0.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Monday approved the hurricane relief money.
