WMO report highlights impacts on human safety, well-being and environment

6 November 2017 (WMO) - It is very likely that 2017 will be one of the three hottest years on record, with many high-impact events including catastrophic hurricanes and floods, debilitating heatwaves and drought. Long-term indicators of climate change such as increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, sea level rise and ocean acidification continue unabated. Arctic sea ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea ice extent was at or near a record low.

Maria, the 13th named storm of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, became a category 5 hurricane near the Leeward Islands on Monday September 18 th, 2017. Hurricane Maria impacted Dominica at approximately 9:35pm on September 18 th as an extremely strong hurricane with wind speeds of 155 mph. Maria then impacted Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis on September 19th, 2017 and the Virgin Islands September 19 – 20, 2017.

Over a week after Hurricane Irma’s ferocious winds and storm surge ravaged Cuba, people in the hardest-hit areas of the Caribbean island are still struggling to meet their basic needs.

Thanks to $320,000 from the Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund (CHAF), Oxfam Canada will help approximately 4,500 people in the province of Camagüey with immediate necessities. The storm damaged or destroyed more than 90 percent of the homes in the municipality of Esmerelda on the northern part of the island.

  • In Haiti, DFID is financing a Real-Time Evaluation (RTE) for Matthew’s emergency operation and is setting up a steering committee with the participation of key stakeholders, including donors. A Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) will soon be launched. Experts from the EU, World Bank, UNDP and Inter-America Development Bank (IADB) are already in-country. Preliminary results are expected by the third week of November. The UK is committing GBP 3 million to the fight against cholera.

The second Pacific Islands Climate Outlook Forum officially opened today with national, regional and international experts on climate services and disaster risk reduction present to explore common approaches and best practices for climate services that can be extended throughout the Pacific Island region.

With the cyclone season closing in, the two-day event hosted by the Fiji Meteorology Service in Nadi is placing a special focus on disaster risk reduction and the importance of climate information for community preparedness.
