GIRLS' EDUCATION

To continue to build the capacities of teachers, and in specific efforts to promote girls' education, the Community Girls Special Project (CGSP) was given a boost when an education expert from the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) conducted a teacher training in Nyal. 15 participants attended this training, which is aimed at ensuring quality education for girls.

Highlights

The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is centrally placed towards the North-Northeast. Areas in proximity of the ITCZ will continue to experience relatively higher rainfall while those further away will experience sporadic or localized rainfall. However, even with only localized rainfall, planting need not be delayed any further as the rainfall received so far is adequate to support germination.

Peace Winds Japan responded rapidly to the tragic earthquake that hit the south eastern Iran city of Bam on Friday, December 26. PWJ's first dispatch, consisting of two staff members with previous experience in the region, flew out the following day of the 27th and arrived that same night in Tehran.

2.7 million beneficiaries will be without WFP assistance in January 2004 !!

A 60,000 MT contribution from the USA and a donation of 9,700 MT from ECHO has been confirmed but the commodities and arrival dates are not yet known. With these two contributions the pipeline for the coming six months looks slightly better than previously feared. However, about 2.7 million beneficiaries will still be deprived of cereal rations in January.

The Colombian Congress approved the "Anti-Terrorist Statute" during the eighth and last debate of the Plenary session in 2003. Articles 15, 24, 28 and 250 of the Political Constitution will thereby be modified as follows: electronic eavesdropping, raids, arrests and searches can be performed without a court order and the Military Forces have been granted judicial police prerogatives.
