Teheran (dpa) - Iran's borders will be closed to war refugees from Iraq, in the event of a United States military attack, as Iran is already supporting more than two million Afghan refugees, the Interior Minister Abdolvahed Mussavi-Lari said Tuesday.

"We still hope that no war will occur, but if it does, we will keep all Iraqi refugees outside Iranian soil as we have no capacity for new refugees,'' the minister told reporters in Teheran.

HONIARA, Dec 31 (Reuters) - The departure of a Solomon Islands patrol boat carrying aid and medicine to three islands hit by a massive cyclone has been delayed until the government pays for emergency food supplies, officials said on Tuesday.

The fate of 1,000 Solomon Islanders remained unknown two days after Cyclone Zoe, a maximum-category tropical storm, battered the islands on Sunday with winds exceeding 300 km an hour (186 mph) and huge waves.

General situation

On the eve of the New Year, UNICEF staff visited Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Alina, Bella, Bart, Sputnik, Catsita and Aki Yurt in Ingushetia. In accordance with information obtained from IDPs residing in the camps, the overall situation is reported as follows:

  • The Ministry for Extraordinary Situations, EMERCOM, has resumed the distribution of food items to the IDPs, however the latter report a lack of basic items, such as food, detergents and hygienic items;
