For many, having access to a clean, private, safe place to go to the toilet is something taken for granted. Yet more than 2.5 billion people worldwide, one third of the world population, live in conditions that make access to sanitation precarious.

It is this large scale of the issue that has lead the United Nations General Assembly to recognise sanitation as a separate human right. The General Assembly resolution recognizes the distinct nature of the right to sanitation in relation to the right to safe drinking water, while keeping the rights together.

Toda la zona de producción de quinua real, ubicada en el occidente del país, está afectada por la sequía y la producción para 2016 está en duda, informó ayer el presidente de la Asociación Nacional de Productores de Quinua (Anapqui), Juan Crispín.

Si no llueve hasta febrero “no habrá quinua” y eso supondría perder mercados de exportación que difícilmente podrán recuperarse, añadió.

El nivel del Río Uruguay bajó en Artigas y en Salto y se mantiene estable en Paysandú. Casi no ha habido variaciones en el número de personas evacuadas. Sí ha habido un leve aumento en el número de personas autoevacuadas, que no significa que más personas estén fuera de sus viviendas, sino que más personas se hayan registrado en los respectivos CECOED. Se está iniciando el operativo de retorno en el departamento de Artigas.

Situación actual

El nivel del Río Uruguay bajó en Artigas y en Salto y se mantiene estable en Paysandú.

BLANTYRE— Malawi is experiencing an outbreak of cholera, two months after the start of the rainy season. Health authorities say the water-borne disease has hit most residents of three districts around Lake Chilwa in eastern Malawi.

The first cholera cases were reported in the eastern districts of Machinga and Zomba on December 19 when one person died and 26 others were receiving treatment at public hospitals.

Health Ministry authorities told VOA on Wednesday that the water-borne disease is now spreading considerably with the number of patients now at 95.

ADEN: The Emirates Red Crescent has delivered 50 water pumps to Yemen's Governorate of Aden to enable the city's municipality to provide drinking waters to the population after water wells were destroyed in the war.

Governor of Aden, Brigadier Aidarous Al Zubaiai, and other Yemeni officials took delivery of the donated pumps .

In a press release, the Emirates Red Crescent said it is carrying out similar projects in other Yemeni governorates to meet demand for clean water.
