Globally, the number of natural disasters, the number of people affected and the impact of disasters are increasing. More than 250 million people have been directly affected by disasters every year since 2000; the highest figures ever recorded, according to the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED). Developing countries in Africa and Asia are particularly vulnerable to extreme atmospheric factors and climate-induced shocks.

Incentives and sanctions are used by external actors to try to stop armed conflicts in the short term. But are they effective in promoting peace? This research by Conciliation Resources argues that these instruments are often not used as part of a broader strategy aimed at resolving conflict. They are often a confused mix of coercion and assistance, which neither force nor encourage the conflict parties towards a negotiated settlement.

Elle dispose d'un Code de la famille depuis 1987 et d'une Constitution qui prône la primauté des droits humains. En outre, elle a adhéré aux recommandations des grandes Conférences africaines et mondiales sur les droits humains, dont celles du Sommet Mondial pour les Enfants.

Introduction

This six-month report describes the programme and activities of the Thailand Burma Border Consortium (TBBC) during the period July to December 2008.

TBBC is a consortium of currently twelve NGOs from ten countries working to provide food, shelter, non-food items and capacity-building support to Burmese refugees and displaced persons. It also engages in research into the root causes of displacement and refugee outfl ows. Membership is open to other NGOs with similar interests.

Background

Norwegian Church Aid-Eritrea (NCA-E) is the Eritrea Country Office of the Norwegian NGO, Norwegian Church Aid (NCA). NCA started work in Eritrea in the 1970s, supporting the relief work of the Eritrean liberation movements through the Cross Border Operation. When the war with Ethiopia ended in 1991, a joint Emergency Relief Desk of twelve former partners in the Cross Border Operation was established in Asmara, with NCA as the lead organisation. NCA set up a country office in Asmara in 1993.

Summary

East Timor's development faces serious challenges. The attacks on the democratically elected leaders in February 2008 underscore the fragility of East Timor's new democracy. While the perpetrators were apprehended and the situation remained calm, the security and justice sectors remain weak and in need of reform. The country continues to rely on international security forces to maintain stability. Across the country, a large number of people remain displaced and vulnerable to natural disasters, disease and food shortages.

This report describes the ability of poor and vulnerable households in selected areas in Myanmar to meet their basic food needs, based on information up to December 2008. The report is produced by the Vulnerability Analysis & Mapping (VAM) Unit at WFP Yangon.

Data was collected with the help cooperating partners, including ADRA, World Vision, WHH, REAM, CARE, KMSS, OISCA, Shalom foundation, and field staff from ten WFP sub-offices plus two field offices.
