SITUATION

1. HURRICANE KATE ASSOCIATED WITH VERY HEAVY RAINFALL DURING END NOVEMBER 1985 CAUSED SEVERE AND WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. SEVEN DEATHS HAVE BEEN REPORTED. 23 MAIN ROADS AND FEEDER ROADS WERE BLOCKED BY LANDSLIDES WITH MANY BRIDGES, CULVERTS AND DRAINS DESTROYED.

1. SEVERE FLOODING CAUSED BY HEAVY RAINS AND RESULTING IN LANDSLIDES AND THE OVERFLOWING OF RIVERS MADE MORE THAN 15,000 PEOPLE HOMELESS THROUGHOUT VENEZUELA DURING THE PAST WEEK. MOST CRITICALLY AFFECTED AREAS ARE CARACAS AND COASTAL DISTRICTS NEAR MOUNT AVILA. HOWEVER EVACUATIONS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN LOW-LYING AREAS OF THE INTERIOR OF THE COUNTRY WHERE THE DANGER OF RESERVOIRS OVERFLOWING IS APPARENT.

SITUATION

1. HEAVY RAINS STARTING IN OCTOBER AND INCREASING MID-NOVEMBER HAVE CAUSED EXTENSIVE FLOODING IN THE PROVINCE OF BUENOS-AIRES (TOTAL AREA AFFECTED: 6,400,000 HA).

2. MINIMAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE DEAD OR INJURED. 50,000 HOMELESS.

3. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE IN AREAS AGRICULTURE (LOSS OF CROPS, YIELD REDUCTION) LIVESTOCK (150,000 CATTLE DEAD) AND INFRASTRUCTURE (ROADS, BRIDGES). OVERALL DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT MORE THAN US DLRS 1 BILLION.

1. UNDRO RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS THAT HURRICANE KATE IN THE NIGHT FROM 18 TO 19 NOVEMBER HIT EASTERN PARTS OF CUBA. HURRICANE EXPECTED TO REACH CITY OF HAVANA BY NOON TODAY (LOCAL TIME).

2. THE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM RUN BY THE NATIONAL CIVIL DEFENCE HAS PROVEN TO BE EFFECTIVE. EVACUATION OF POPULATION IN ENDANGERED AREAS IS BEING CARRIED OUT IN A SATISFACTORY FASHION.

1. TYPHOON DOT (SALING) HIT WITH MAGNITUDE 5.5 SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL LUZON ON 18 AND 19 OCTOBER 1985. MOST HEAVILY-AFFECTED ARE PROVINCES AURORA, NUEVA ECIJA, TARLAC AND BUR LACAN.

2. INITIAL REPORTS INDICATE 39 DEAD, AND 30 INJURED. 52,454 FAMILIES (APPROX. 250,000 PEOPLE) ARE AFFECTED.

3. CROP DAMAGES COVER A SURFACE OF MORE THAN 40,000 HECTARES. 9,492 HOUSES ARE DESTROYED AND 17,831 DAMAGED.

3. FIRST ASSESSMENT INDICATES: 93 DEAD AND 1,853,000 PEOPLE

2. IN MEXICO CITY INTERNATIONAL TELEPHONE AND TELEX LINES CUT. FIRST ESTIMATES INDICATE THAT PERHAPS 35 PERCENT OF ALL BUILDINGS DAMAGED AND 30 SQUARE KM OF CENTRAL MEXICO CITY ALMOST TOTALLY DESTROYED. WIDESPREAD FIRES AND GAS LEAKS.
