1. FURTHER TO TRAGIC GAS LEAKAGE 3 DECEMBER 1984 WHICH KILLED APPROXIMATELY 2,500 PEOPLE AND AFFECTED OVER 150,000, ASSISTANCE NOW NEEDED FOR SURVIVING VICTIMS OF EXPOSURE TO TOXIC GAS.
EVACUEE CAMPS HAVE BEEN SET UP. APPROX 70,000 PERSONS NEEDING MEDICAL ATTENTION, OF WHICH 2,000 CURRENTLY HOSPITALIZED. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE EYE, CHEST AND OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS. LONG-TERM EFFECTS NOT YET DETERMINED.

SITUATION

1. MOST RECENT OFFICIAL DAMAGE ASSESSMENT AS FOLLOWS: 134 DEAD, 650,000 SERIOUSLY AFFECTED. 31,000 HOUSES COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND OVER 120,000 FLOODED AND DAMAGED. OUT OF 198,000 HA RICE PADDIES FLOODED, TOTAL CROP LOSSES OCCURRED ON 55,000 HA. CROP
LOSSES ALSO ON 6,310 HA MAIZE, 8,652 SWEET POTATOES AND 16,000 MANIOC. SOME 400 SCHOOLS AND 230 NURSERIES DESTROYED.

OFDA's mission is to provide humanitarian assistance to victims of disasters around the world. The office responds to all types of natural disasters, including earthquakes, volcanic erupt ions, cyclonic storms, floods, and droughts. It also provides technical assistance in the wake of accidental or man-made catastrophes, such as oil or toxic waste spills, power shortages, fires, explosions, and air crashes. When large numbers of civilians are affected by civil strife and temporarily forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods, OFDA provides immediate assistance.

THE UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT CO-ORDINATOR HAS REPORTED THAT MOUNT KARANGETANG SITUATED ON SIAU ISLAND, NORTH SULAWESI, RESUMED VOLCANIC ACTIVITY ON THURSDAY 8 NOVEMBER 1984. HOT VAPOUR AND BLACK SMOKE WERE EMITTED. THE GOVERNOR OF NORTH SULAWESI REPORTED VILLAGERS WITHIN THE DANGER ZONE EVACUATED TO SAFER AREAS. THE UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT CO-ORDINATOR WILL REPORT FURTHER AS INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.

1. A STRONG CYCLONIC STORM WITH WINDS OF 100 MILES PER HOUR STRUCK SOUTH INDIAN PROVINCES OF TAMIL NADU AND ANDHRA PRADESH ON 14-15 NOV 1984. CYCLONE WAS FOLLOWED BY FLOODS INUNDATING LARGE PART OF AFFECTED PROVINCES. 200 VILLAGES IN ANDHRA PRADESH ARE STILL UNDER WATER.

2. CYCLONE UPROOTED TOWERS AND ELECTRIC POLES IN THE ROCKET LAUNCHING CENTRE OF THE INDIAN SPACE RESEARCH ORGANISATION LOCATED ON AN ISLAND 100 KM NORTH OF MADRAS.

1. REPORTS RECEIVED BY UNDRO/UNDP REPRESENTATIVE FROM OFFICE CIVIL DEFENSE INDICATE TYPHOON UNDANG HIT CENTRAL REGIONS LEYTE, NEGROS, PANAY AND PALAWAN ISLANDS ON 3 NOVEMBER. PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE NUMBER OF AFFECTED: 240,000. 140 DEAD OF WHICH 100 IN CITY OF ROXAS, NORTHERN PANAY ALONE.

2. PRELIMINARY MATERIAL DAMAGE INCLUDES OVER 2,500 HOUSES TOTALLY AND 3,000 PARTIALLY DESTROYED. DAMAGE ASSESSMENT IS ONGOING. RESULTS WILL BE COMMUNICATED.
