Denmark has pursued increasingly restrictive immigration and asylum policies. During the past three years, the country has adopted some 70 immigration-related amendments aimed at intensifying restrictions, dramatically cut back its asylum recognition rate, and called for detaining as many failed refugees as possible. Observers have repeatedly criticised the penitentiary-like conditions of Denmark’s main immigration detention centre as well as inadequate efforts to identify victims of torture, who can be subject to detention.

  • Recent contributions from Denmark (DKK 10 million) and Sweden (SEK 10 million) help WFP to continue providing life-saving food assistance to refugees.

  • Despite the contributions, chronic funding shortfalls have forced WFP to continue with reduced rations for refugees. Rations are being distributed at 72 percent of the 2,100 recommended kilocalories to prevent a complete pipeline break within the coming months.

Since 01 January 2017 until 30 June 2017, 102,847 refugees and migrants have arrived in the Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, Spain and Cyprus, including arrivals to the Canary Islands and by land to Spain). Arrivals by sea in this period comprised of 17 per cent children, 12 per cent women and 71 per cent men.
