Today the European Commission is stepping up its response for the humanitarian crisis in Iraq by a further €25 million, bringing total EU humanitarian aid to €159 million in 2016. The new funding comes in addition to aid deliveries this week by EU member states which were channelled via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for the current emergency in Mosul.

On Friday in Copenhagen, Denmark’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Anders Samuelsen met with the leader of Syria’s Civil Defence, Raed al-Saleh.

Al-Saleh is head of the ’White Helmets’, so called because of their characteristic head gear, which saves wounded civilians from the ruins of Syria’s bombed-out towns and cities. At the meeting, the Minister for Foreign Affairs - announced a new Danish contribution of DKK 20 million towards the corps’ efforts in 2016, and discussed the perspective for finding a solution to the conflict in Syria.

Throughout Europe there are many migrants, primarily rejected asylum seekers, who live in a state of protracted legal and social limbo without any long-term prospects. The authorities refuse to regularize them or to grant them any kind of legal status, but often, they cannot go back to their countries of origin for various reasons, most often, fear of persecution.

The Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF) is a cost-effective way to support humanitarian action in Sudan. Under the direction of the Humanitarian Coordinator (HC), the SHF aims to support the timely allocation and disbursement of donor resources to the most critical humanitarian needs as defined by the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) or any agreed upon strategy by the HC. The SHF provides funding to international and national non–governmental organizations and UN agencies. The SHF receives voluntary donor contributions and supports humanitarian response year–round.
