The Danish government has decided to strengthen its already comprehensive efforts in the West African Sahel-region, in order to address terrorism and irregular migration to Europe. With the collapse of Libya, developments in the Sahel-region affect Europe and Denmark more directly. Today the region is the primary route for migrants from West Africa to Europe. Moreover, the countries in the Sahel are faced with an increasing threat from terrorist groups such as the West African branch of the Al Qaeda.

September 2, 2017 (JUBA) - The Danish Minister of Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs has pledged to continue providing humanitarian aid to South Sudan as millions struggle to survive because of a lack of food, water, healthcare and basic shelter.

Tørnæs was in war-torn South Sudan where he met the head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), David Shearer.

Shearer briefed the Danish minister on the political, security and the humanitarian situation in the war-torn East African country.

DENMARK LAUNCHES EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND

Denmark has launched an emergency relief fund, drawing on the Start Fund’s experience, to allow the country’s grassroots organisations to respond to crises around the world. The Danish Emergency Relief Fund (DERF) is also open to funding for smaller NGOs within countries affected by crisis.

NAIROBI – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomes a US$10.7 million (75 million Danish Krone) contribution from the Government of Denmark to help roll back famine in South Sudan and to assist hungry people in Horn of Africa countries hit by drought.

“WFP is very grateful to Denmark for helping to sustain the life-saving response against drought in the Horn and because of conflict in South Sudan, where famine was declared in two areas in February,” said Valerie Guarnieri, WFP Regional Director for East and Central Africa.

The Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs, is now increasing Denmark’s humanitarian assistance to combat the acute food security crisis in the Horn of Africa and Yemen. Denmark will provide 300 mio. DKK (approx. 42,8 mio. The Danish government is donating DKK 20 million towards Unicef’s efforts to help children and former child soldiers who have fled the terrorist movement Boko Haram in Nigeria and neighbouring countries. Boko Haram has forced 2.2 million people from their homes. The 20 million Danish Kroner donation to Unicef will be announced today at a donor conference in Oslo on the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria and the region around Lake Chad.

Le premier tour de l’élection présidentielle malienne s'est déroulé dans le calme et a fortement mobilisé les électeurs, dont un grand nombre de jeunes et de femmes. Plus de 6 millions de Maliens étaient appelés dimanche à se rendre aux urnes.

« C’est la première fois que je fais la queue pour voter, il y avait du monde (…). Certains n’avaient jamais voté de leur vie mais ils ont tenu à faire entendre leur voix. Cette fois, je n’ai jamais vu une telle mobilisation autour d’un vote, » dit Anta, une électrice présente au centre de Kalaban à Bamako.
