Some 39 countries in need of food assistance - FAO expects slightly lower global cereal production

20 September 2018, Rome - Persistent conflicts and climate-related shocks are currently driving high levels of severe food insecurity, particularly in Southern African and Near East countries, which continue to require humanitarian assistance, according to a new report published by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) today.

In November 2017 a series of security incidents forced Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to evacuate our team from Bangassou, Central African Republic (CAR), and suspend activities in the area for five months. In April 2018, our team returned to the city. Assistant Medical Coordinator Dr Ernest Lualuali Ibongu has been working in Bangassou since April 2017, where he experienced the temporary suspension of activities and their resumption. Here, he describes the situation.

The European Commission has allocated €26.5 million in emergency aid for vulnerable families affected by the humanitarian crisis in the Central African Republic and its spill-over into neighbouring countries.

The funding comes as some 2.5 million, half the country's population, are in need of assistance, with the crisis triggering an influx of refugees into neighbouring countries.
