This publication highlights a set of 24 UNFPA good practices on South-South cooperation (SSC) in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, gender equality, youth empowerment, and population data for development. It includes SSC case studies on family planning, maternal and child health, midwifery, obstetric fistula, HIV and AIDS, SRH in humanitarian setting, population data and population ageing. It demonstrates the successes and commitment of UNFPA and its partners in promoting South-South partnerships for the achievement of the SDGs.

The Bhutanese refugees, who have been languishing in Beldangi Camp, Jhapa, for the past 26 years, have urged the human rights bodies to take initiative for their repatriation.

On the occasion of the International Human Rights Day on Monday, around 200 Bhutanese refugees took out a rally in Beldangi camp, appealing the national and international human rights watchdogs to help them return to their homeland.

The Bhutanese refugees living in Beldangi camp, Jhapa, have expressed dissatisfaction over the decision of the World Food Programme to discontinue food assistance to the refugees by the end of 2018.

They have urged the WFP to continue the food support until their problems are resolved.

“We want a permanent solution to our problem before the food assistance gets discontinued,” said Tikaram Rasaili, secretary of Beldangi camp. “If the WFP stopped distributing food, those of us here could starve.”

KATHMANDU – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will transition out of its food assistance program in Nepal to refugees from Bhutan starting in January 2019. The programme, spanning over 25 years, has helped thousands of refugees meet their daily nutritional needs since their arrival in Nepal in 1992. This transition follows a successful resettlement programme of the refugees to countries including the USA, Canada and Australia.

Untapped potential

Food fortification – adding vitamins and minerals to commonly eaten foods - has proven to be an effective strategy in reducing micronutrient deficiencies. Countries in North America and Europe have been fortifying foods since the 1920s, which led to the virtual eradication of nutrition-related diseases like goiter, rickets, beriberi and pellagra. But today 2 billion people across the world still suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, as nutritious foods are still not accessible to all.

The 2016 monsoon was much heavier than usual affecting almost all of Bhutan, especially in the south.

Landslides damaged most of the country’s major highways and smaller roads. Bridges were washed away, isolating communities.

  • A dietary assessment of school meals shows that the school children are not receiving adequate nutrition through the meals provided at the schools.
    The study has become a basis for decision makers to plan and initiate improvement efforts.

Washington D.C., September 18, 2018 --- The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is putting new finance to work, improving education prospects for the world’s most disadvantaged children. Grant approvals by the GPE Board of Directors in the seven months since the successful Financing Conference in Senegal in February have reached almost US$300 million. At the conference, donors pledged US$2.3 billion for 2018 through 2020 and further commitments continue to be announced.
