It is under-fives week at Zambia’s Nyangwena health centre and, outside in the morning sunshine, women are taking turns to weigh their babies. A noisy toddler wriggles as his mum places him into the harness of a set of scales. Measurements are taken and, afterwards, ice lollies handed out to children.

Increased seasonal rainfall is forecast to relieve dryness throughout southern Africa

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. An erratic rainfall distribution since the Short-Rains season has caused dryness in Somalia,
    Ethiopia, and Kenya.

  2. Continued below average rainfall since October has resulted in widespread dryness throughout southern Africa.

  3. Poor rainfall has led to anomalous dryness across Madagascar. Heavy rainfall forecast later this month is expected to provide relief.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Countries of asylum hosting refugees from the DRC have been generous in maintaining an open-door policy and in securing asylum to old and new population groups. Protracted displacement, however, continues to deplete already limited national and local resources. Existing camps and sites in asylum countries are overcrowded. Some 60,000 Congolese refugees have specific needs and problems, a significant proportion are children who are at risk or who require additional support.

Violent storms and flash flooding triggered by heavy rain have affected the south east African countries of Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique over the last few days. Over 20 people have reportedly died since 09 January, 2019.

Malawi

Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) reported on 11 January that flash floods in the capital Lilongwe, Central Region, have caused severe material damage, affecting around 600 people. No fatalities have been reported.

Cholera continues to represent a major public health concern in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR). From January to December 2018, approximately 37,565 cases and 443 cholera-related deaths were reported in the region with an average CFR of 1.2%. These cases emerged from 10 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR).

  4. Many weeks of below-average rainfall has strengthened dryness in Angola, Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

  • The registration of Rwandan refugees in North and South Kivu was completed on 30 November. A total of 76,067 were biometrically registered and given refugee certificates from 2015 to 2018.
  • 3,707 Central African refugees have expressed an intention to return to their country in November. UNHCR is collecting intentions and discussing the possibility of a tripartite meeting.

For each FEWS NET country and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year.
