Moisture deficits continue to grow in eastern Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya

  1. Moisture deficits have grown in eastern Ethiopia, southern and central Somalia, and northeastern Kenya due to poor rainfall since late September. Over central and southern Somalia, a dry weather pattern is forecast, which could worsen conditions on the ground.

Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan, sits in a category 4 seismic zone. A 7.3 MMS earthquake in 1948 leveled the city, leaving only three buildings standing, and killed an estimated 160,000 people. Recognizing that a detailed map of the city would be crucially important in the event of another such calamity, U.S. Ambassador to Turkmenistan Allan Mustard and his wife, Ann, began spending evenings and weekends mapping Ashgabat early in 2015 using Open Street Map (OSM) and data collected on their GPS navigator.

The information sheet describes the results achieved by the ‘Programme to improve national and regional locust management in Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA)’ established in 2011. The Programme is based on the key concepts of the locust preventive control strategy consisting of monitoring locust habitats. Early to detection of changes in number, density, behaviour and appearance within the locust populations leads to reduced damage on crops and rangelands, reduced negative impact on human health and environment due to less use of chemicals and reduced cost.

    Djibouti, and western Somalia since early July have led to high seasonal moisture deficits.
