Climate change, however, threatens to undermine decades of development gains and put at risk efforts to eradicate poverty. Tackling climate change must be central to efforts to reduce poverty and sustain development.

Emergency risk communication (ERC) is a vital public health intervention. It can save lives during emergency situations and, as such, should be considered an investment in people’s health, safety and security.

Starting today, a new package is available to guide countries of the Region in establishing systems and plans for effective ERC tailored to their specific contexts. The package is the result of a pioneering project launched by WHO/Europe in March 2017.

For example, Tashkent – the most populated city in Central Asia today – was razed to the ground by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in 1966, with over 300,000 people reportedly losing their homes. Turkmenistan’s capital city of Ashgabat was severely impacted by a 7.3 quake in 1948, with thousands of deaths reported.

YEREVAN, 27 June 2018 - Representatives from six countries in Central Asia and the South Caucasus are meeting for two days in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, to discuss progress in implementing the global plan for reducing disaster losses, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

More than 200 representatives of governments, civil society, United Nations and the private sector are examining the increasing impact of extreme weather events and climate change and the risks from potential man-made hazards.
