Overview

During the first nine months of 2018, just under 25,100 refugees were submitted by UNHCR for resettlement' to 19 countries in Europe.2 This is 24% less than the same period in 2017, but already two-thirds more than the average rate of 15,400 submissions per year during the previous 10 years.

  • Ethiopia hosts 905,831 refugees and asylum seekers within its borders, including the 36,185 who arrived since the start of 2018.

  • The Government of Ethiopia has committed to address the concerns of refugees, including a pledge to grant local integration to those who have lived in the country for 20 years and above.

  • Resettlement remains the chief durable solution for refugees in Ethiopia, but limited quotas mean that only 3,240 refugees will be referred to resettlement countries in 2018.

  • UNHCR Ethiopia’s resettlement submissions target for 2018 was 4,240 individuals to the USA, New Zealand, Sweden and Canada, which was revised downwards to 3,240 individuals.

  • To date, 2,136 refugees were referred to the RSC for onward submission to resettlement countries, 1,907 refugees have been submitted and 608 have departed.

Population of Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas has risen to more than 1.5 million people due to the Rohingya influx.

The highly dense population generates 10,000 tons of waste per month and immediate steps should be taken to address the resulting adverse impacts on health and environment, urged speakers at a programme in Cox’s Bazar.

They were talking at the inception meeting of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s project titled “Sustainable Solutions to Solid Waste: A Local Response to the Rohingya Crisis” on 16 October 2018 in Cox’s Bazar.

Highlights
- By September 2018, some 89,000 refugees and migrants, almost a quarter of whom children, arrived in Europe through the Mediterranean migration routes. Most children arrived in Greece and Spain.
- Between January and September 2018, nearly 16,700 children benefitted from UNICEF specialized child protection support in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Germany. With the start of the school year, 13,810 children were also reached with UNICEF-supported formal and non-formal education activities.

A refugee from Iraqi Kurdistan, Taffan Ako fled to Sweden in 1997 with her family. Today she is the Coordinator of One Young World Ambassadors for Scandinavia and Eastern Europe and founder of EmpowHERment, an organization that assists women and young girls who have been former ISIS sex slaves or victims of human trafficking. Her foundation finances integration projects for children and women in Europe and in Iraqi Kurdistan.

- Resettlement focal point staff have been trained on proGres V4 and an action plan to transition from proGres V3 to V4 has been established.

The Government of Sweden has announced yesterday its support to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Community Security and Stabilization Programme (C2SP) operating in five states in Sudan, with a total fund of 5 million USD.

This announcement took place yesterday during a meeting with H.E. Ambassador to Sweden Mr. Hans Henric Lundquist and First Secretary Ms. Anna Saleem Hogberg who have met with UNDP Country Director Dr. Selva Ramachandran.

Emergency risk communication (ERC) is a vital public health intervention. It can save lives during emergency situations and, as such, should be considered an investment in people’s health, safety and security.

Starting today, a new package is available to guide countries of the Region in establishing systems and plans for effective ERC tailored to their specific contexts. The package is the result of a pioneering project launched by WHO/Europe in March 2017.
