Valencia, 17 June 2018 – Red Cross emergency teams are assisting hundreds of people who disembarked this morning from the Aquarius and two accompanying vessels at the Spanish port of Valencia.

The people spent almost a week at sea after being rescued from inflatable boats off the coast of Libya. Some are in need of medical attention, having suffered hypothermia, dehydration and other injuries.

Budapest / Geneva, 4 August 2017 — Hundreds of Red Cross volunteers are on the ground in towns, cities and beaches as record temperatures sweep much of southern and central Europe.

According to weather reports, south and central Europe are experiencing the highest August temperatures in more than a decade. The Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre in the Netherlands says this is indicative of a trend that has seen hotter summers become more common.

Scenario 1 Slight increase in migration via N Africa to EU

The political and security situation in Libya remains unstable and the movement of migrants from Libya to the Mediterranean continues largely unhindered. The slightly rising trend in arrivals to Italy continues, with an expected seasonal spike during the summer months as smuggler activity becomes slightly more organised. The number of people stuck in Libya remains stable. Meanwhile the number of returns and readmissions from (and to) EU member states continues at a very low level.

  • Since the EU-Turkey agreement, sea arrivals to Greece have significantly dropped compared to 2015, but many migrants continue to reach Europe. Since the summer, there was a shift of sea arrivals to Italy, but every European country has been affected by the migration crisis which is the biggest one for the continent since the second World War.

  • The Italy: Population Movement appeal has been revised with an increased budget of 9,495,715 Swiss francs which includes search and rescue activities in the Mediterranean. The Italian Red Cross is teaming up with independent charity Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) on a joint life-saving mission in the Mediterranean.

The main route remains to be Southern Italy (especially Sicily) as first entry points from the North African coasts. In 2015, according to the UNHCR,153,842 arrivals arrived in Italy by boats mainly from North African countries. In 2016, 47,820 people have arrived in Italy by sea (UNHCR- 2 June 2016).
