Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 78,372 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 20 September, 34,238 of whom travelled to Spain, the leading destination this year. This compares with 132,715 arrivals across the region through the same period last year.

Spain, with over 44 per cent of all irregular arrivals on the Mediterranean to date, has outpaced Greece and Italy throughout the summer.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 77,555 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 17 September, with 33,611 to Spain, the leading destination this year.

This compares with 131,884 arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 298,663 through a similar point (13 September) in 2016.

Spain, with over 43 per cent of all irregular arrivals on the Mediterranean through this year, has outpaced

Greece and Italy throughout the summer.

(Bruxelles) FIDH, EuroMed Rights, et l’Organisation Mondiale Contre la Torture (OMCT) dénonce les violences commises à l’encontre des migrants à la frontière Espagne-Maroc dans une déclaration conjointe, et incitent les autorités des deux pays à en sanctionner les auteurs.

A nouveau, 116 personnes ont été expulsées depuis Ceuta vers le Maroc, le 23 août 2018, et deux ont perdu la vie lors des arrestations de masse au Maroc conduites depuis. Il s’agit d’une nouvelle démonstration des conséquences de l’approche violente, restrictive et sécuritaire des politiques migratoires.

It has ruled that the judge from Ceuta – who closed the case in January 2018 – did not have the “slightest interest in hearing the witnesses”.

The Moroccan authorities’ large-scale crackdown on thousands of sub-Saharan migrants, asylum seekers and refugees without due process is cruel and unlawful, Amnesty International said amid ongoing intensive government raids in the north of the country.

Since the end of July, the Moroccan police together with the Royal Gendarmerie and the Auxiliary Forces have carried out major raids on the neighbourhoods where refugees and migrants live in several cities, with particular intensity in the northern provinces of Tangiers, Nador and Tetuan, which neighbour the Spanish borders.

Since 2015, around 1.5 million people of mixed migration movements have travelled to Europe. Whether they are escaping violent conflict, internal displacement or climate change; or seeking to reunify with family, get a better education or to find a job to support their family back home, they are united in the hope for a better life. UNICEF estimates that around 400,000 children were among those taking the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean from 2015-2018 – or 1 in 4 of the migrants arriving in Europe.
