SITUATION

1. UNDP/UNDRO RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN APIA, SAMOA, AS WELL AS CHIEF OF UNDRO SOUTH PACIFIC PROGRAMME OFFICE IN SUVA, FIJI, AND AUSTRALIAN OVERSEAS DISASTER RESPONSE ORGANIZATION (AODRO) HAVE REPORTED TWO CYCLONES MOVING IN TANDEM THROUGH CENTRAL SOUTH PACIFIC OVER WEEKEND 7/8 DECEMBER.

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL

1. FROM 1 TO 4 FEBRUARY, CYCLONE 'OFA' HIT WESTERN SAMOA AND ENTIRE REGIONS ARE AFFECTED. ELECTRICITY AND TELECOMMUNICATION CUT OFF, WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTED IN MOST AREAS AND SOME PORTIONS OF ROADS COMPLETELY WASHED AWAY. TWO AIR STRIPS IN SAVAII ARE DAMAGED AND TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN UPOLU, SAVAII AND PAGO PAGO ISLANDS HAS NOT RESUMED AT THIS MOMENT.

2. HEAVY RAINS, ROUGH SEAS AND WIND GUSTS AFFECTED MOSTLY ISLAND RAROTONGA, WHERE POPULATION EVACUATED

3. DAMAGE CURRENTLY ESTIMATED AT US DLRS 19-23 MILLION.

4. UN DELEGATE LEFT APIA 4 JAN FOR ASSESSMENT MISSION.
