The Director made a point to specially thank the public for assisting and contributing toward Dominica’s hurricane relief efforts. She also encouraged continued assistance, especially in the area of building supplies.

Hurricane Maria impacted Dominica at approximately 9:35pm on September 18 th as an extremely strong hurricane with wind speeds of 155 mph. Statement from Acting Prime Minister of Saint Lucia Honourable Lenard Montoute

Wednesday, September 20, 2017 — The Cabinet of Ministers met Tuesday morning to discuss the preliminary situation in Dominica following the passage of Hurricane Maria on Monday September 19th and Saint Lucia’s immediate response to provide relief.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment, Honourable Lenard Montoute explained that plans were already underway to make Saint Lucia an operational base for the relief effort to Dominica.

The Caribbean has been buffeted by an exceptional number of intense storms and hurricanes this year. In the space of just a few days, Hurricane Irma has been followed by Hurricanes José and Maria, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. Hurricane Irma formed near Cabo Verde towards the end of August and, according to the US National Hurricane Center, was the strongest hurricane on record to form in the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Hurricane MARIA continued moving west-northwest over the Caribbean Sea, strengthening. Its center passed south of St. Croix island (US Virgin islands) early in the morning of 20 September. It then continued moving towards Puerto Rico as a category 5 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 270 km/h.
