The Government of Austria, through the Austrian Development Agency, has contributed EUR 1.5 million (US$ 1,802,885) to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in support of the Agency’s health programme in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

UNRWA currently operates a network of 65 primary health-care facilities and mobile clinics to serve the more than 2 million Palestine refugees registered with UNRWA in the West Bank and Gaza, offering preventive, basic and advanced medical care services tailored to each stage of life.

January 19, 2017, Vienna, Austria. The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has signed a grant agreement with Care Austria for a project aiming at strengthening farmers’ livelihoods and food security in the Gaza Strip, directly benefiting around 7,500 people.

The US$800,000 agreement was signed by OFID Director-General Suleiman J Al-Herbish and Dr Andrea Barschdorf-Hager, Care Executive Director, who was accompanied by Dr Daniel Seller, Care Program Director.

The European Union made the second contribution this year to the Palestinian Authority's (PA) quarterly payment of social allowances to Palestinian families living in poverty in the West Bank and Gaza. Around 115,000 poor Palestinian families in the West Bank and Gaza will receive social allowances through the PA's cash transfer programme. The contribution of €10 million from the European budget is equivalent to nearly one-third of the budget for this payment.

Trends on sea arrivals

Between 13 and 19 June, some 405 refugees and migrants arrived by sea in Greece. This is a slight increase from the previous week when 358 people arrived to the Greek shores. For the fourth time in the last ten days, there were 40-60 daily new arrivals to Samos.

In April, there were an average of 119 daily arrivals to the Greek shores. This figure represents an 86% decrease as compared to the average arrivals in March of 870 people daily.

In Italy, the number of refugees and migrants who arrived in April was noted to be 8,490. As compared to the same month in 2015 (16,063), the total number of arrivals has dropped by more than half.

Around 119,000 poor Palestinian families in the West Bank and Gaza will receive financial payments through the PA's cash transfer programme. This contribution, amounts to around €12.2 million and is funded by the European Union (€10 million) and the Governments of Austria (€1.5 million), Ireland (€0.7 million) and Portugal (€0.025 million).
