As the ICRC Water and Habitat Unit celebrates its 30th anniversary, we look back at some of the ICRCs most significant water, sanitation and shelter operations over the last three decades.

In 1859, four years before the ICRC was formed, our founder Henry Dunant made water one of his priorities as he struggled to help wounded soldiers after the Battle of Solferino. Thirty years ago, our awareness of the essential role of water, sanitation and habitat for the victims of conflict led us to create the Water and Habitat Unit, known as "WatHab."

It examines the record of states in protecting children from use in hostilities by their own forces and by state-allied armed groups. It finds that, while governments’ commitment to ending child soldier use is high, the gap between commitment and practice remains wide.

*Little change to estimates of cereals harvests

Maize and wheat prices remain high, but may have peaked*

KEY POINTS

  • Estimates of cereal harvests have changed little from August to September. Further cuts to estimates of the already bad US maize harvest have been quite small.

  • Hence the sharp price rises seen in the maize and wheat markets in July have probably reached their limit — even if at more than US$320 a tonne for maize, US$365 a tonne for wheat, prices are high.

Introduction

In one dreary morning, I, the pupil of kindergarten #2, became an IDP; to be more specific, I was forced to become an IDP. In several hours, I lost my friends, home and happy childhood. I experienced the horror of hunger and cold. At age of 6, I realized words "peace" and "bread". The vision of endless flow of people worn out from hunger and cold and the taste of a piece of bread I clutched in my fist will never fade from my memory.
