Climate Change: Displacement recognised in the COP 21 Paris agreement

From the director

2014 was a devastating year with record numbers of people living in internal displacement induced by conflict, violence, disasters and natural hazards. Meeting the immense needs generated by these calamities remains one of the most challenging humanitarian tasks faced by the international community in modern times. To address these serious situations, IDMC in 2014 published 20 country overviews, 2 global reports, 8 thematic/technical reports, 32 blogs, 8 briefing/discussion papers, 22 submissions to human rights bodies.

This report analyses the different monitoring and data collection tools currently being used by a range of international humanitarian organisations in the West Bank. The research found these tools to be limited as they focus on prevention rather than what happens during displacement, they have a narrow geographical focus on areas under Israeli administration, they only monitor displacement for up to 90 days and ignore the many other triggers of displacement.

05 May 2015 description

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) is pleased to present its quarterly update for the period January to March 2015 in a modified format that reflects IDMC’s new strategic objectives and expected outcomes. 2015 is a transitional year for IDMC during which we will meet our running commitments and at the same time engage in activities within the new strategic framework. These reports will of course continue to keep you updated on progress made towards achieving our goals.

SUMMARY AND KEY FINDINGS

This study assessed the living conditions of a particular group of Iraqis: those who in the early years of this millennium had fled violence and persecution in Iraq to Syria and later, since 2011, returned to Iraq, seeking refuge from the civil conflict in Syria that erupted after the Arab Spring.

Summary

IDMC estimates that there were at least 263,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in occupied Palestine as of September 2014. There are, however, no cumulative and confirmed figures for the territories - the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip – so estimates provide only a partial snapshot of the displacement that takes place as a result of human rights violations in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Summary

In 2013, 9,500 Syrians were displaced per day on average. By July 2014, the total number of internally displaced people (IDPs) reached 6.4 million, a third of the entire population of the country. An additional three million Syrians have sought refuge in neighbouring countries. A stable middle-income country that hosted refugees from all over the region and beyond just four years ago, Syria is now experiencing a displacement and protection crisis of a magnitude the world has not seen for many years.

From the director

I had the pleasure of joining the IDMC team in 2013, taking the helm from Kate Halff, who after four years of the excellent work and dedicated service, left the organisation in May.

2013 was another year of turmoil for many. Conflicts and disasters worldwide forced millions of people to flee their homes, leaving many stuck in limbo within the borders of their own country.

Girl, disrupted

Violence, conflict, disasters and displacement have different impacts on men, women, girls and boys. Women and girls suffer higher rates of gender-based violence (GBV) at such times yet all too often the participation of women and girls in the humanitarian response and post conflict processes feature too low to contribute to a significant change. In societies where women’s role is more submissive or subservient, existing inequalities and vulnerabilities are often made worse.

On 01 February 2014, the report "Under Fire" issued by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) was launched in London. The report addresses the Israeli violations in Access Restricted Areas (ARA) in the Gaza Strip. It highlights the suffering experienced by civilians, farmers and fishermen due to restrictions imposed on the freedom of movement in those areas, the frequent targeting of civilians with live ammunition, house demolitions and restrictions imposed on fishing areas.
