GENEVA / AMMAN (17 July 2017) – A United Nations committee* has heard serious concerns about Israel’s human rights record, including the deteriorating situation in Gaza, inadequate protection for detained children and increasing obstacles being faced by human rights defenders and journalists.

Members of the Committee also heard testimony on the expansion of settlements, the ongoing use of administrative detention, excessive use of force and possible extrajudicial killings, and lack of accountability.

The High Commissioner is deeply dismayed at the execution on Sunday of 36 people in Iraq in relation to the 2014 Camp Speicher massacre, during which some 1,700 cadets were killed by ISIL fighters, particularly given the serious due process concerns and fair trial shortcomings in these cases.

We strongly condemn a series of rocket and mortar attacks against several residential areas and markets in Taizz between 3 and to 8 June 2016, which killed 18 civilians, including seven children, and injured 68 others. Several markets were hit while full of people who were shopping ahead of Ramadan.

(1) Flogging in Iran

We condemn the outrageous flogging of up to 35 young men and women in Iran last week, after they were caught holding a graduation party together in Qazvin, north of Tehran. According to State media, the students were arrested on Thursday, interrogated and sentenced by the Prosecutor’s Office to 99 lashes each and then were flogged – all within the space of 24 hours.

The Gaza authorities’ statements follow the demands of several families for the death penalty to be carried out against individuals accused of killing their relatives.

GENEVA / AMMAN (6 May 2016) – The United Nations Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories met with a range of civil society organisations, UN representatives and Palestinian officials during their annual fact-finding visit to Amman (2-5 May 2016).

During the visit, representations were made on a wide range of issues affecting the Palestinian and Syrian people in territories occupied by Israel.
