Members of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Alumni Association have begun preliminary work to help the Palestinian population of Gaza following the recent heavy Israeli military operation.

The Association members, all former participants of JICA's regional training programs, have made visits to Zaitoun, one of the most heavily damaged areas of Gaza in the recent conflict to collect basic data about the situation and the needs of the local people.

They visited families who lost members during the clashes or whose homes were destroyed.

Aid to Palestinian refugees was the subject of talks between Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Sadako Ogata and Karen Koning AbuZayd, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), on October 5.

UNRWA provides education, health care, relief, social, and other services to 4.4 million Palestinian refugees living in five regions; Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.
