Pakistan has been hit by the worst floods in decades with over 20 million affected-people in the country, outnumbering those of the 2004 Tsunami or of this year earthquake in Haiti. In the North West as well as in the South of the country, the torrential rains have wrecked entire villages, swallowed up by rivers in spate that have turned into wrenching torrents sweeping away houses, crops and livestock.

Prioritizing Rural Development Fundamental to Advancement of Women

The manifold disadvantages and discrimination which continue to plague rural women in many parts of the world was an issue voiced by many speakers as the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) continued its discussion today on the advancement of women with close to 50 speakers taking the floor.

(New York: 1 August 2007) The United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator announced today that $40 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will be used for life-saving programmes in 16 countries in the second of two annual rounds of allocations for underfunded emergencies in 2007.

"These grants will provide vital funding for people caught up in some of the world's most neglected humanitarian crises.

In 2006, both The world health report and World Health Day focused on health workers. The creation by WHO and other partners of the Global Health Workforce Alliance and the adoption by the World Health Assembly of resolutions calling for a response to this crisis have paved the way towards better recognition for the vital role health workers play within health systems.
