Since the early morning on Thursday, 30 December 2004, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have killed 5 Palestinians, including a child and a disabled young man, and have injured 11 Palestinian civilians, including 3 children and a woman. IOF have also destroyed a number of houses. These attacks have been launched during an ongoing offensive by IOF on Khan Yunus refugee camp and al-Amal neighborhood in Khan Yunis. PCHR believes that the intensive presence of IOF in these areas can cause more casualties among Palestinian civilians.

CAIRO, Dec 28, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- A leader of the Islamic resistance movement Hamas rejected calls by Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee, to stop fighting against Israeli occupation, the Egyptian Arabic daily Al Ahram reported on Tuesday.

Mahmoud Zahar, member of the political leadership of Hamas, said in an exclusive interview with the daily that it was the intifada (uprising) which made Israel prepare to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and the northern parts of the West Bank.

The ICRC has taken part in the release of 165 Palestinian detainees to the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

On 23 and 26 December, ICRC delegates interviewed the detainees who were to be released by the Israeli authorities in private, in order to ascertain that they agreed by their own free will to their release and the location of their release.
