Last month, Ousseni Souffiani’s life was turned upside down. He had lived in a hillside shantytown on the island of Mayotte, but a torrential downpour swept his flimsy home away, killing his wife and four of his children who were sheltering inside.

This year plague came early to Madagascar and spread quickly. When it began to move out from the areas where it traditionally occurs, people became increasingly alarmed – both within the island nation and in neighbouring territories and countries.

From August to late October 2017, more than 1800 suspected, probable or confirmed plague cases were reported, resulting in 127 deaths. This outbreak is unusually severe, and there are still five more months to go before the end of the plague season.

Suite au passage du cyclone « Hellen » sur l’île de Mayotte, la ministre des Outre-mer, George PAU-LANGEVIN, annonce que le gouvernement a décidé d’indemniser à hauteur de 100 % les demandes déposées par douze communes du département au titre du Fonds de secours des Outre-mer.

Ces indemnisations représentent un montant de 4,089 millions d’euros auxquels s’ajoutent 1,73 millions d’euros d’indemnisation pour le conseil départemental de Mayotte.

9 October 2012 – Le Haut Commissariat des Nations Unies aux réfugiés (HCR) a annoncé mardi que six personnes s'étaient noyées et 10 autres étaient portées disparues après le naufrage d'une petite embarcation lundi matin au large des côtes du département français d'outre-mer de Mayotte. Vingt-quatre personnes se trouvaient à bord.

This is a summary of what was said by the UNHCR spokesperson at today’s Palais des Nations press briefing in Geneva.

Six people are confirmed drowned and ten are still missing after a small vessel carrying 24 people capsized in the early hours of Monday off the French territory of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean. This is the second such tragedy in a month. It brings to 69 the number of people reported dead or missing in such incidents off Mayotte so far this year.
