The 2017 hurricane season in the Caribbean was unprecedented. High-powered, high impact hurricanes, including Irma and Maria, left a path of destruction, infrastructure damage and casualties in more than a dozen territories in the region. Without forecasts and warnings, the tragic loss of life would have been even higher.

The technology which uses satellite imagery, can electronically collect, store, analyse and share spatial data from health statistics to land clearing, population movements and post-hurricane destruction to help inform better policy and decision making.

  • Tropical cyclone KIRK continued west over the Atlantic Ocean toward the Lesser Antilles. Its centre crossed St.Lucia on 27 September evening UTC as a tropical storm before it moved into the Eastern Caribbean Sea.

  • Over the next 48hours, it is forecast to weaken as it continues west away from land.

  • In Saint Lucia, there have been reports of downed power lines and damaged roofs.

We collaborated around the responses to Hurricane Matthew in 2016, Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 and last week’s Tropical Storms.

  • Tropical cyclone ISAAC continued moving westward over the eastern Caribbean Sea, weakening. On 14 September at 3.00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 400 km south-east of Puerto Rico (USA) and 700 Km south-east of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (tropical storm). Heavy rain and strong winds are currently affecting the central Lesser Antilles, especially Dominica and Martinique.

Tropical Storm Isaac

According to the United States of America’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s National Hurricane Centre (NHC), Tropical Storm Isaac continued to track westward and toward the Caribbean on Wednesday morning (12 September 2018) on a path that could bring it across the Lesser Antilles by Thursday, 13 September 2018.

Tropical cyclone ISAAC has been downgraded to a tropical storm. On 12 September at 3.00 UTC its centre was located approximately 900 km east of Martinique and Dominica Islands (Lesser Antilles), with maximum sustained winds of 102 km/h. Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to weaken slightly as it moves across the central Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean Sea. Heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge could affect Martinique, Dominica, and Guadeloupe over 13-14 September. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Antigua, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis.
