Vienna— While the perilous and deadly Mediterranean sea migration route is well known, new figures from IOM show that more than one in five people arriving irregularly in Europe do so by land.

The most frequently-used route is from Turkey to Greece where authorities reported a total of 12,166 land arrivals since the beginning of 2018.

ICRC Vice-President, Dr Gilles Carbonnier's address to the eighth meeting of states parties to the convention on cluster munitions.

Mr President, Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

We all know the toll that cluster munitions take on people. The child left traumatized and permanently disabled after picking up what they thought was a toy. The farmers facing destitution because their land is unsafe to work. Entire communities displaced and unable to return home to rebuild their lives.

Mediterranean crossings deadlier than ever, new UNHCR report shows

Three years on from the shocking images of lifeless Syrian toddler Alan Kurdi on a Turkish beach, a new report by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency shows that crossing the Mediterranean Sea has become even more deadly.

In the first seven months of 2018, the number of irregular border crossings into the EU via the top four migratory routes fell by 43 per cent from a year ago to about 73 500, mainly because of lower migratory pressure on the Central Mediterranean route.

In July, some 14 900 irregular crossings were detected on the main migratory routes into the EU, 18% fewer than in the same month of last year.

The migration flow continued to decrease remaining largely under control; coordination and cooperation remain crucial

An array of response measures, ranging from coordinated enhancement of border-controls by the most affected countries to policy actions supported by the EU, introduced at the end of 2015 and maintained throughout 2016 and 2017, contributed to a marked reduction in the volume of the non-regional migration flow observed in the Western Balkans.

Key Findings
- Overall, the number of illegal border-crossings by non-regional migrants recorded at the green borders in Q1 2018 was slightly below the values of both Q1 and Q4 2017, in spite of seasonality; Indications that migrants are searching for alternative routing to bypass the enhanced controls on the main Serbia-centred corridor, continued being observed into Q1 2018.
- Lower pressure reported at Serbia’s northern common borders with Croatia, Hungary and Romania.
- Continued increase in migration pressure along the Albania.

In 2017, 50 million children around the world fled war, violence, poverty or insecurity. Uprooted through no fault of their own, children are traumatised by their experiences of migration or displacement in five ways:

  • The feeling of safety and security: far from home and feeling disconcerted in stressful situations, this fundamental need – which is so vital for a child’s development – is compromised.
