Key messages

  • International prices of wheat and maize were generally firmer in January, supported by weather-related concerns and a weaker US dollar. Export price quotations of rice also strengthened mainly buoyed by renewed Asian demand.

  • In East Africa, in the Sudan, prices of the main staples: sorghum, millet and wheat, rose sharply for the third consecutive month in January and reached record highs, underpinned by the removal of wheat subsidies and the strong depreciation of the Sudanese Pound.

WHO is to release a new report that will provide targeted recommendations on enhancing hospital safety and disaster preparedness in Kyrgyzstan.

The report is based on an assessment of the safety of the country’s hospital system as a whole. The assessment identified weaknesses and informed remedial measures to strengthen hospital readiness and response as part of the national disaster preparedness strategy and related interventions.

• On 15 November 2017, Kyrgyz Republic Country Strategic Plan 2018-2022 was approved by WFP Executive Board during the Second Regular Session of the Executive Board. Supporting comments were given by the permanent missions of Afghanistan, Panama, the Russian Federation, and the United States, on behalf of the Lists and were related to further continued support, partnership and gender transformation.

Children in the Central Asia and South Caucasus sub-regions are vulnerable to poorly mitigated natural hazards, under-resourced social services, and weak governance and protection, despite the middle-income status of these countries. More than 80 per cent of children in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan live in areas of high or very high seismic risk, and 87 per cent of schools in Kyrgyzstan assessed for seismic risk are unsafe. The unfinished child health agenda includes tackling stunting rates as high as 30 per cent and related risks.

The 2017 presidential election was won by Sooronbai Jeenbekov and marked the second time since independence in 1991 that Kyrgyzstan experienced a peaceful transfer of presidential power. International observers found the election to be competitive and orderly, but noted concerns about abuse of public resources, pressure on voters, and vote buying. Prior to the election, authorities banned public assemblies in central Bishkek and introduced restrictions on domestic election monitors, such as limiting the number of civil society observers per polling station to one.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report focuses on lessons learned by WFP from the Ready to Respond project, a joint UN humanitarian preparedness programme funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Ready to Respond was instigated in late 2013 by UNICEF and WFP, who were joined in 2015 by OCHA and UNHCR. DFID’s support enabled the agencies to implement a wide range of preparedness activities, aiming at reinforcing their own capacity and the capacity of partners in being better prepared to respond to disasters.

Drought worsens across Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique and northern South Africa

  1. An early end to seasonal rainfall has caused a drought in eastern Kenya and southern Somalia. Seasonal moisture deficits have strengthened across several bimodal areas of Tanzania during December.

  2. While east-central South Africa has benefited aboveaverage rain since late November, northern and westcentral areas of the country report moderate to large moisture deficits over the past 30 days.

    However, dryness remains in parts of the northern Somali region of eastern Ethiopia. Moisture recovery is unlikely in the northern region, as seasonal rains are expected to be concentrated towards the south through November.
