Throughout the Middle East region last week, the number of battles has continued to decrease as part of a trend since the beginning of the new year. At the same time, instances of remote violence have increased slightly. In Yemen and Saudi Arabia, there was a sharp increase in reported fatalities not seen elsewhere in the region. Moreover, the number of riots and protests have remained relatively consistent with recent weeks, although there was a noticeable increase in Lebanon, reminiscent of the late December 2018 agitation (Washington Post, 23 December 2018).
Throughout the Middle East region last week, political violence and reported fatalities decreased since the week prior, the latter significantly. This decline can be attributed for the most part to Syria, where, among other things, Islamic State (IS) activity has dropped due to recent successes against the group in Hajin. Meanwhile, riots and protests have generally remained consistent with previous weeks.
Instances of political violence have been on an upward trend since 16 December 2018, with both battles and remote violence rising by approximately 25 and 65 percent, respectively. At the same time, demonstrations decreased overall in the latter half of December; however, despite this reduction, unrest against economic and labour conditions spread throughout the region during this period – most surprisingly to Oman where such reports are quite rare. In both Iraq and Lebanon, yellow vests were worn by many demonstrators as part of a movement in solidarity with French protesters.
There was a significant drop in reported fatalities throughout the Middle East region last week, primarily along the battlefronts in Syria and Yemen. This drop is possibly due to a less substantial decrease in instances of remote violence (airstrikes, shelling), combined with Syrian Democratic Forces’ (QSD) territorial gains in the Hajin enclave. Meanwhile, regional demonstrations have continued to rise, particularly in Palestine, Iran, and Bahrain.
