Mexico City/New York, NY, December 13, 2018—Current and proposed policies to severely restrict the ability to seek asylum in the United States, along with the US government’s unwillingness to quickly process migrants at ports of entry along the US-Mexico border, have created an administrative limbo that leaves Central American asylum seekers in Mexico exposed to further violence, said the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on Thursday.

Highlights

• Since 13 October 2018, an estimated 16,000 migrants, largely from Honduras and El Salvador, have transited through Guatemala.

• The Government of Mexico has officially reported the presence of some 8,000 migrants in its territory. As of 28 November, at least 6,067 migrants, including 1,058 children, had arrived in Tijuana (Baja California state), on the border with the United States. In Mexicali there are about 1,200 migrants settled, and around 300 are estimated to still be on the move heading north in Mexico.

Desde mediados de octubre, diversos grupos organizados de personas salieron desde el Norte de Centro América, particularmente desde Honduras y El Salvador, en dirección norte del continente con la esperanza de llegar a México y a los Estados Unidos de América. Estos grupos están compuestos por personas que tienen necesidades de protección internacional, y según encuestas más de 74% de las personas en estas caravanas considera correr peligro si regresan a sus países.

Since mid-October, several persons organized in groups left the North of Central America – particularly from Honduras and El Salvador – heading northward with the hope of reaching Mexico and the United States of America. These groups are comprised of persons with international protection needs, and according to interviews more than 74% consider being at risk if they were to be returned home. By the end of November, the number of persons transiting through Guatemala is estimated at 16,000, while the Mexican government has officially reported the presence of some 8,000 in its territory.

As part of a joint-proposal sent to and funded by a collective of Anglican Alliance agencies, the efforts help meet immediate and long-term needs, beginning with a ministry through San Esteban Anglican Church in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, across the border from Donna, Texas.

San José – Desde el 4 de noviembre de 2018, la OIM ha facilitado el retorno voluntario y seguro de cientos de centroamericanos que formaban parte de las caravanas de migrantes que se dirigían a EE.UU. a través de territorio mexicano.

Al miércoles 28/11 453 migrantes de los cuales un 84% eran hombres, y que eran parte de las caravanas, solicitaron y obtuvieron el apoyo de la OIM para retornar a sus países de origen o de residencia: Honduras (57%), El Salvador (38%) y Guatemala (5%). Veinticinco niños migrantes no acompañados retornaron por vía aérea.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 107,216 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 28 November. This year is the fifth straight during which the arrival of irregular migrants and refugees has topped the 100,000 threshold – although 2018’s total is low compared to those recorded at this time in 2017 (160,440) and 2016 (350,549).

San José – Since 4 November 2018, the UN Migration Agency (IOM) has facilitated the voluntary and safe return of hundreds of Central Americans who were part of the caravans of migrants traveling US-bound through Mexican territory.

As of Wednesday (28/11), 453 migrants (84% men) who were part of the caravans requested and obtained IOM support to return to their countries of origin or residence: Honduras (57%), El Salvador (38%) and Guatemala (5%). Twenty-five unaccompanied migrant children returned by plane.

IOM’s voluntary assisted return program aims to achieve the voluntary, orderly and humane return of migrants who can not or do not wish to remain in their host countries and wish to voluntarily return to their country of origin.

Since November 4th, with PRM support, IOM has provided voluntary return assistance to 453 people, of which 25 are unaccompanied migrant children
