GENEVA (28 November 2018) – Migrants and other persons in mobility, such as refugees and asylum seekers, travelling in caravans from Central America towards Mexico and the United States of America deserve full respect of their human rights by all countries involved, UN experts* said.

The independent UN experts have voiced their concerns in letters to the governments of Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and the United States and called on them to abide by international law.

GENEVA (26 October 2018) — States of transit and destination have an obligation to protect the human rights of Central American migrants regardless of their migration status, said two UN expert committees on human rights.

The Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW), together with the Committee on the Rights of the Child, express serious concern about Central American migrants fleeing severe human rights violations in their home countries of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, which are plagued by poverty and violence.

GENEVA (27 April 2018) – UN Special Rapporteur Michel Forst has announced his first official visit to Honduras, from 29 April to 12 May, to assess the situation of human rights defenders and to review State efforts, progress and challenges in ensuring their protection and in enabling their important role.

“I want to find out whether human rights defenders are able to promote and protect human rights safely and with the protection and support of the authorities in Honduras in an enabling environment that facilitates their work,” said Mr. Forst.

I have just returned from the privilege of representing the High Commissioner in Honduras, where I was joined by the Administrator of UNDP, Helen Clark. With the strong public support of President Hernandez, our new country office there has now been officially opened.

GENEVA / WASHINGTON, D.C. (19 August 2016) – Honduras has become one of the most hostile and dangerous countries for human rights defenders, warned today two top United Nations and Inter-American human rights experts. So far this year, at least eight defenders have been killed in the country, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
