CARTAGENA, 21 June, 2018 – Hurricane Mitch, which in 1988 cut a swathe of destruction across Central America, marked a “before and after” for the region’s approach to disaster risk reduction, an international conference heard.

The Category 5 storm, the highest on the international rating, caused over 11,000 deaths, more than 7,000 of them in Honduras. It was the deadliest hurricane in Central America since Hurricane Fifi, which killed slightly fewer people in 1974.

Antecedentes e introducción

En marzo de 2015 se llevó a cabo la Tercera Conferencia Mundial de las Naciones Unidas sobre la Reducción del Riesgo de Desastres, realizada en Sendai, Japón. En ella los Estados Miembros de las Naciones Unidas acordaron y adoptaron el Marco de Sendai para la Reducción del Riesgo de Desastres 2015-2030. Este marco es el principal instrumento orientador para la gestión del riesgo de desastres (GRD) en los países y tiene un renovado sentido de urgencia en el contexto del desarrollo sostenible y de la erradicación de la pobreza.

PANAMA, 7 June, 2016 - More than 170 ministers and delegates from 35 countries of the Americas are expected in Asunción, Paraguay, tomorrow for two days of talks on how to reduce disaster risk and disaster losses across the region.

The region suffered 93 major recorded disasters last year and ranks second only to Asia as the most disaster prone region in the world. Over the last ten years it has accounted for 31.6% of all disaster-related mortality worldwide.
