  • Flash floods and mudslides across Central America and Cuba and have affected at least 180 000 people since 5 October. At least 18 deaths have been reported (8 in Honduras, 5 in Nicaragua, 4 in El Salvador, 1 in Costa Rica) and thousands of people have been evacuated. More rain is expected in the coming days and weather alerts remain in place for the next 72 hours. Classes have been suspended in Guatemala and in El Salvador.

The situation

On 5 October 2018, a low-pressure system developed over Central America and began inundating the region with heavy rainfall. The low-pressure system later converted into Hurricane Michael, which is now threatening the southern coastal regions of the United States of America.

Según el Servicio Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología (Senamhi) se prevén vientos de moderados a fuertes en Santa Cruz, con velocidades de entre 60 a 90 km/h, que afectarán principalmente a las provincias Cordillera, Ibáñez, Warnes, Ichilo, Sara, Florida y Santiesteban.
